The Basilica of Our Lady of Hanswijk is a basilica in Mechelen. The current baroque church was built between 1663 and 1681 according to the plan of architect Lucas Faydherbe. The first stone was laid in 1663 by Archbishop Andreas Cruesen. The basilica was put into operation on May 30, 1678. The rotunda has a diameter of 15.50 m, the dome reaches a height of 34 m. History: in the hamlet of Hanswijk, on the banks of the Dijle, in the 10th century a loaded ship that could not be reached stranded, someone came up with the idea to bring the Our Lady's image to the shore. Now the boat sails on again. The inhabitants decided that Maria wanted to be honored. The statue was transferred to a nearby place of worship, dedicated to Lambert and Catharina. The chapel quickly became one crowded place of pilgrimage. |
